Dian Magie fell in love with wood firing when she began assisting Judith Duff with loading and firing her train kiln soon after moving to North Carolina in 2000. After retiring as Director of UNC Center for Craft, Creativity and Design in 2010 she built her cross-draft wood kiln (the Cougar Kiln designed "to make it easier for women over 50 to fire) by Will Baker. WIth 36 cu ft stacking area at 6 ft high for ease of loading, the kiln has great flashing and fires evenly to cone 11-12 throughout in 15-17 hours.
