Douglas Caulfield
NC Mountains Pre-Conference Artist
BRCC Anagama
Douglas Caulfield was raised in a pottery family. His Grandmother, Marilyn Jones, started a ceramics studio in Montreat, North Carolina in 1974. His mother took over the studio in 1992. The studio, Sally Jones Pottery, functions as a community art center that offers classes to mostly amatuer and hobby potters. While he was raised surrounded by potters and crafts people, it wasn’t until his late teens that he began to truly appreciate his connection to ceramics. Douglas began attending the University of Mississippi after high school and after some time there he signed up for a ceramics class. At first I thought it would be a fun way to get elective credits and bolster my gpa. Douglas was mistaken. After his first experiences with atmospheric firing he was hooked and ended up applying to be in the BFA program. Ole Miss offered him a glimpse into the world of professional ceramics and knew that this was a community that he belonged in. He did not finish my degree at Ole Miss, but after moving to North Carolina to help Preston Tolbert build kilns Douglas started the process to finish my degree at the University of North Carolina, Asheville. His work is mostly wood fired or soda fired. Right now he is exploring surfacing, specifically high alumina shinos and how they resist wood ash and soda.
